Heimann + Schwantes is a design studio based in Berlin. We develop visual concepts and their cross-media realisation in the cultural sector as well as in other socially relevant fields.

Michael Heimann and Hendrik Schwantes founded the studio in 2007 with the aim of combining a content-driven, systematic approach to design with a hands-on, experimental design practice. At first, the cultural and economic realities of Berlin’s cultural scene, shaped by individuals, provided an ideal testing ground for this approach.

Over time, we have developed a strong interest in addressing broader societal issues as well. Communicating a wide range of themes from politics and society – for specialist audiences as well as the wider public – demands a continuous expansion of our communicative, graphic and media repertoire. These two perspectives, the individual and the universal, shape our work.

This spans strategy, editorial and graphic design, data visualisation and visual research – both digital and print. Projects unfold through direct, straightforward exchange with our clients: structuring processes, taking briefings seriously, and surprising with visual solutions. Depending on the task, we draw on a broad network – including architects, authors, editors, programmers, illustrators and photographers – as well as strong connections to publishers in the field of visual culture.

Michael Heimann

For over 25 years Michael Heimann has been working in the fields of editorial, information, and corporate design.

He started his career in a big agency, located in the small city of Zurich. Then he worked in a small agency, but in the big city of Berlin. There, he began his own business designing books – both educational ones for school publishers and experimental ones for artists.

As a graphic designer, he considers himself a generalist. This involves exploring the diverse aspects of visual representation in addition to the professional design work. He feeds these experiments – whether created with software, coded, or drawn – back into the studio’s practice.

Hendrik Schwantes

Hendrik studied photography and communication design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, before specialising in editorial design at Lars Müller Publishers in Zurich. He then ran his own studio in Berlin – until he met Michael Heimann at the launch of Olafur Eliasson’s book “Your Engagement has Consequences” at Galerie Neugerriemschneider. The book remains one of his favorites to this day.

Hendrik spends more time at cultural events than most graphic designers. His interest in contemporary art and architecture is reflected in his focus at the studio, which centers on working on books and exhibitions. Time permitting, he occasionally takes on roles as editor or curator – particularly in connection with Hamburg-based still-life photographer Hans Hansen.

Though he’s lived in Berlin for over 20 years, he still believes in politeness.
