Art for the Millions – 100 Sculptures from the Mao Aera

Hirmer Verlag München, 2009
210 x 280 mm, 200 pages

The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt hosted the Chinese sculptural group Rent Collection Courtyard—its first ever exhibition in the West. This ensemble of more than 100 life-size sculptures is among the most important works in modern Chinese art history. It has firmly established itself in Chinese collective memory.

The publication seeks to communicate the large-scale group of sculptures in a dramatic format composed of seven acts bound closely to the book medium. The graphic design refers to the sculptural group’s declarative form while simultaneously seeking to avoid clichéd adaptations of “socialist art.”
